About

David Short is a Toledo native, born in 1988 and raised in the growing suburban community of Oregon, Ohio. He attended clay High School where his focus in Machine Trades helped build his appreciation for technical process and creation.

In 2013 Short graduated from Bowling Green State University with a Bachelors in Fine Art, focusing on traditional 2D art as well as 3D animation. He previously attended Owens Community College where he received his Associates of Arts, focusing on traditional and commercial art.

His passion for art lies mainly within the 2D world, with works relying heavily on drawing techniques, but not limiting himself to a specific medium. He has works in print, paint, ink and 3D mediums as well.  Short's current work is focused on going larger and more difficult, branching away from the traditional print and into the installation realm.

Statement

I work with print and other 2D mediums to materialize my interest in the workings of the human body and mind, specifically as to how they are connected. There is a morbid beauty about the inner workings of what’s under the skin when shown through art that pushes the boundary of peoples comfort zones. The use of drawing-like media lets me achieve a high level of detail, giving the images of the human body a believable and well rendered aesthetic. The layers of color build up to reference the construction of the human body with its layers of skin, muscle, veins, organs and bones.

The mind experiences different events that can be shown through physical form. Apathy, self-destruction and multiple personalities are an example of whats represented in my current body of work. The characters created with these ideas have a direct link between their mental and physical states. Displaying these concepts as visual stimuli instead of as a textbook theory helps people understand issues that others around them may be dealing with. Mental decay, stress, depression, etc… all facets of the psyche that may be hard to grasp without this.
